Non-Alcohol vs. Alcohol-Free vs. Low-Alcohol

What’s the Difference?

Non-Alcohol (or “NA”) must contain between 0.01% and 0.49% ABV.

  • A small amount of alcohol is present.
  • The statement “contains less than 0.5% alcohol by volume” must be immediately adjacent to the “Non-Alcohol” label.
  • There are more Non-Alcohol craft beers in the marketplace than Alcohol-Free craft beers.

Low Alcohol (or “LA” or “reduced alcohol”) must contain between 0.5% ABV and 2.49% ABV.

Alcohol-Free (or “AF”) must contain 0.0% alcohol. No amount of alcohol is allowed.

  • When a product is labeled “Alcohol-Free”, it must also be labeled as “0.0% ABV”
  • The federal government enforces and ensures that any beverage labeled as “Alcohol Free” has absolutely no alcohol – not even a trace.
